Although I can’t imagine an e-bike completely replacing a non-assisted bike for me, Friday’s ride with Dhurba and Huesos had me considering how much I appreciate having one. Not only was it hot, but the traffic frenzy both leaving and re-entering town felt especially overwhelming. I strongly suspect I’d have been sweaty, miserable, and frustrated had I been towing Huesos via leg power alone.
In fact, I had so much fun with the e-bike that I even started to imagine a trip to the coast with it, and the challenges and logistics of doing so.
Bear in mind that I don’t ride my bike to train (climbing for the sake of climbing, maybe). And whilst I’m drawn to the personal challenge and stoicism of touring on my own steam, I’d like to think that my riding is tied most strongly to enjoyment (climbing for the sheer joy of climbing, then!)
Heading up into the hills with Dhruba.
The temperature forecast dangling tongues for all. Given the heat and how little shade there was, I was able to offer Huesos a lift when needed, even up a long climb.
Initially, we followed on a well graded road. Then, we hopped on a little cut-through that involved some steep and loose climbing, which requires a different riding technique with the Bafang BBSHD. I find controlling the motor and how much power it outputs isn’t easy on this kind of surface, at least compared to a torque activated system.
Full mudguards keep both dust and rain at bay.
Happy Dhruba with Cold Corona!
Huesos and his chariot caused quite a stir in Santa Ines del Monte. A lady with a chicken under her arm smiled at him and then ask hesitantly “Does he bite?”
Heading back down the mountain, into the comal of the valley floor. I turned the assist level to 0 to conserve battery life. The Jones’ 200mm rotors front and rear were welcome, give the weight of the bike, the trailer, and Huesos.
Back down into the valley again. These grassy, rural roads are such a pleasure to amble along and explore, whether you’re on an e-bike or a non assisted one.
It was then a 20km ride back into town from Dhruba’s house to mine, which is where having the Bafang was especially welcome. There’s no way I could have overtaken rush hour traffic and outpaced diesel belching trucks without it!
