If you’ve been in touch to ride and I’ve been around to meet up, chances are, I’ve suggested joining Huesos and I on our local loop!
It’s the ride we do most days, be it in the morning or the afternoon. Short and sweet. Fantastic views that offer a fresh perspective of the city. And a very mixed range of conditions, from dirt roads, to pavement, to trails, to cobbles… a perfect shake down ride before you head out!
There’s a caveat though. I haven’t posted these publicly before, simply because historically, there’s been a number of robberies in both of these zones, and safety has been an issue. However, I haven’t heard of anything recently, and with awareness – or preferably, if you’re riding in a group – I don’t think there’s too much to worry about. Now I see them on RWGPS heat maps, I figured it would be useful to share them with specific reference to safety.
Similarly, I’d also suggest riding them when the areas are likely to be busy – either early in the morning, or before dusk. These are the cooler times of the day, when most Oaxacans are out dog walking and exercising. All this said, please do your own research in case anything changes, and I haven’t updated this post.
Check out this post on Staying Safe in Oaxaca too.
I’ve started these routes in Ejido Guadeloupe Victoria, as that’s where we live. But you can hook into them at any point in town.
Do get in touch if you want to join us on our rides. The distance is short, the pace is slow, and we love to stop for views and to chat. But you’ll still get a workout… as it’s Oaxaca!
Microondas Loop
This one works well in either direction. If you’re riding it clockwise, you can route up past the hospital, and join the cobbled climb from there. The viewpoint at the top, directly below the radio tower, is the spot we often ride to for our Coffee Outside meetups.
This works well in either direction.
Cerro El Fortín
I think this one is best in a counter clockwise direction.
There is a trail version of this loop too, which I’ll post at some point.
If anything changes, please drop me message in the comments. Thanks!
