Causeway and Intervale Trails Day Ride (New England Pt 2)

A super fun, 50km day ride with Sage... aka the backway to the RC car shop! And a visit to Winooski Cycles too.

What happens if you’re into RC cars and you love mountain biking? You figure out a ride to an RC car shop that includes trails, singletrack, and gravel. That’s what!

After a couple of days finding our feet in Burlington, this 50km loop proved the perfect conduit to and from Mikes Auto Parts, purveyors or Traxxis cars (and big car parts too). We didn’t actually buy anything, due to a lack of cargo space (where’s that trailer when you need it), but we did have a fun time window-shopping cars that we’d only seen on Youtube. Now I know what to get Sage for his birthday, too (-:

Sharing the Greenway with a whole gamut of users.

The Boy Sage and his Surly Troll.

The Jones in ‘Burlington day ride’ mode: capacity for a picnic, plus towel and swimming trunks, is de rigueur for any ride here.

Heading out onto the skinny causeway. The bike-only ferry is only running at weekends at this time of year, so we just rode out a ways, then turned back (RC cars were calling…)

A little slice of Traxxis heaven! Admiring some of the Goliath cars we’ve ogled on youtube videos.

The connector across Macrae Farm Park. A fun little adventure, just be sure to check for ticks!

In Winooksi we met Dan, who used to manage the Old Spokes Home. His new shop, Winooski Wheels, is named after the nearby river and is a great little hangout.

It’s an Aladin’s cave of interesting builds, cycling memorabilia, and vintage machines.

Dan and his purple Bassic Hog’s Back, a super versatile bike that’s designed just over the border in Montreal.

On the way back into town, we hopped onto the Intervale trails, a network of mellow singletrack that hug the edge of the Winooski river.

If only there was more primate property in the world.

A sliver of Vermont green carpet magic.

Go Sage!

The Route

Here’s the route we took and a few notes where roads were busy. For the most part, it sticks to bike paths, trails, rural roads, and the odd gravel stint, and makes for a good family ride (especially if you like RC cars).
