Gravel, mtb, and bikepacking routes in Oaxaca + gpx files.

Oaxaca has a wonderful network of varied cycling, from big enduro trails to rural roughstuff, from high mountain overnighters to coast-bound roller coasters...

At the beginning of the pandemic, I found myself stuck in Oaxaca, Mexico for various reasons.

Cycling keeps me sane so I dug around to see what day rides I could enjoy. It didn’t take long before an excellent treasure trove of routes in the area, Oaxaca MTB, revealed itself.

That evening I dropped Larry Ginzsky, the site organiser, a line. By morning, my inbox was chockablock with rides and since then, I’ve been working my way through his generous resource. I’ve lightly modified them on occasion to suit my obsession for paved-free riding. And I’ve also dug around further for multi-day adventures, in preparation for more relaxed, post-pandemic times.

It turns out Oaxaca de Juárez has a tonne of riding potential, much of which can be easily accessed right from the city’s front door…

Get in touch for a curated version of my favourite Oaxaca outings, divided into gravel/dirt, trail, and bikepacking categories. It probably needs an update but it will provide some ideas for now.

Aside from Larry’s font of information, visit Oaxaca Explorer for ideas, another site that I’ve trawled for inspiration.

Thanks for checking in. And enjoy!

What’s the ideal bike for Oaxaca? I have a gravel bike with 700×43 gravel kings and a 29er hardtail set up for aggressive trail. I know the Enduro trails are world class but my understanding is that they are all shuttles.

I guess it depends on what kind of riding you want to do… Dirt roads in the valleys? High mountain trails? Bikepacking the San Jose route?

I’d say a hardtail with 2.3s to 2.6s will give you the most options – be it local trails, dirt roads, or bikepacking – and cover you for everything but the Black Diamond enduro descents. But it really depends on where and what you want to ride…
